The Foundation of UMDNJ and The Dean’s Biomedical Research Support Annual
Internal and Bridge Grants Program
http://njms.umdnj.edu/research/orsp/annual_grants_program.cfm
The mission of the internal grants program is to provide financial support to enable
NJMS investigators to obtain preliminary data for new projects which will form the
basis for more extensive grant applications
Eligible Projects: Proposals in the following categories will be accepted:
(1) single investigator “seed” projects
(2) “high impact” collaborative projects
- Single Investigator Projects: Proposals will be considered from single
investigators to undertake experiments to obtain preliminary results on “seed”
projects. These data will be used to craft applications for securing future extramural
funding. Up to $50,000 (including matching funds) will be awarded for proposals of this
type.
- “High Impact” collaborative projects: Collaborative applications
from two or more investigators will be considered. Up to $70,000 (including matching
funds) will be awarded for multi-investigator proposals. The goal of this mechanism is
to promote collaborations in an area which may be different from the primary focus of
each of the individual investigator’s laboratories. The development of new
inter-departmental and inter-disciplinary research projects is encouraged. The potential
impact of the collaboration in stimulating new research directions and larger grant
applications will be a factor to be considered in evaluating these proposals.
Bridge Grants Program
http://njms.umdnj.edu/research/orsp/bridge_grants.cfm
To allow investigators to continue specific aspects of their research projects in
circumstances when funding has lapsed. The goal of the bridge grant program is to enable
investigators to address specific questions posed in previous review panels with the
objective of re-submitting these proposals to secure extramural funds. Investigators
having competitive renewals pending are appropriate applicants for “bridge
funds”. In such cases, the Applicant must include with their applications the
review critiques of pending renewals at the time of submission or as an addendum prior
to the review panel meeting. One of the primary review criteria for bridge grant
applications is how the requested funds will be used to focus on the specific concerns
expressed in the critiques of the PIs NIH application. Other factors which will be
considered in reviewing these applications are the PI’s overall level of funding
and the degree of responsiveness that the PI demonstrates in addressing the
reviewers’ comments.
Bridging funds will be awarded in the total amount of $50,000. $25,000 will be awarded
from the UMDNJ-Foundation and Dean’s Biomedical Research Support Program and $25,000
via a “match” from departmental funds or other sources.
